Harry’s Orchard was created by the
National Trust at the request of Hunters Inn ex-licensee Mr Philip Reed Evans as a memorial to Mr Harry Westacott who died
in 1989.
Harry had moved to the area from Chulmleigh when he was about 15, working as a labourer at neighbouring
farms such as Mannacott and then for the National Trust for a number of years. After he retired he kept active through his vegetable gardening supplying lettuces to the
Hunters Inn for Philip Reed Evans and before that for another predecessor Mr Mick Lambert.
He was in his
80's when he died and he is buried at nearby Trentishoe Church.
He lived at Syringa Cottage at the bottom of the hill to Trentishoe - to go in was a step
back in time with no electricity - by choice - and cooking on an old ‘Bodley’
He would walk over to the Hunters Inn and back to his cottage
twice a day for his half of ale. He was a familiar figure to many of the Hunters visitors - “ I’ll just have half,
sir” being his common response to numerous offers of a drink!
There is a plaque in the Hunters inn at one
end of the bar, which simply states 'Harrys Corner'.
The orchard lies halfway between the Hunters Inn and his cottage near the far path to
Heddons Mouth. Anyone is welcome to sit and enjoy Harry’s Orchard.
